You can’t tell people ‘I’m an opener or I’m a finisher’: Sanju Samson | Cricket

Sanju Samson believes that in recent years he has prepared himself in a way that no one calls him a one-dimensional cricketer. The dashing keeper-batter from Kerala has missed the T20 World Cup ticket but understands it’s harder than ever to get into the national team’s elite 15 with the kind of quality that Indian cricket is churning day in and day out is.

“Playing different roles is something I’ve been working on for many years. I’m confident to hit everything in the order.”

Samson believes that to be successful, one must be flexible. “You shouldn’t arrange a place for yourself. You can’t tell people, ‘I’m an opener or I’m a finisher.’ Over the past three to four years, playing in different roles and places (in order) has added a new dimension to my game,” he added.

The 27-year-old, who has played in 7 ODIs and 16 T20Is so far, said finding a place in the Indian team is challenging and there is a lot of competition.

“It’s going to be really challenging. Finding a place in the Indian team is really challenging. There’s a lot of competition, even within players who are on the team now. When these things happen, it’s important to focus on myself .” said Samson in answer to a question.

“I’m happy with the way I’m performing. I want to improve…”, he added.

Samson leads India A in the three List A matches against New Zealand A, which start in Chennai from Thursday.

“The quality of cricketers we have on our team is incredible. So it really helps everyone to raise their level. We keep challenging ourselves. We try to perform every time we get the chance,” said Samson.

The A-series always keeps the edge players in the selection radar and Samson likes to lead the national A-team.

“They (India A-games) are really important. There’s not much difference between an A-game and an international game. The competition is almost the same. So it’s important to take advantage of the opportunities.”
