Suryakumar Yadav had a great outing in 2022 as the middle hitter scored 1164 runs in 31 T20I innings. His approach was such that fans began to compare him to South African legend AB de Villiers for his innovative percussion. With a strike percentage of almost 190, Suryakumar also managed to beat two centuries and nine half centuries in the shorter format.
In recognition of Suryakumar’s heroics, he was rightly named ICC Player of the Year on Wednesday. While Suryakumar has made his mark in the shorter format, he now hopes to do the same in the longer format.
Suryakumar has been included in the squad for the first two Tests against Australia, which begin in Nagpur on February 9. Suryakumar is yet to feature in Tests, but with Rishabh Pant ill after a horrific car accident, he could be seen filling in the blank and KL Rahul could take on the wicket-keeping duties.

Former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina shared his thoughts on the same and praised Suryakumar’s wide range of shots and supported the batsman to give him playing time at the upcoming Border-Gavaskar series.
“The way he performs, I think he should play in all three formats and without him all three formats wouldn’t even exist. The way he performed, the way he shows his intent, the way he has different plans shots, he also plays fearlessly and knows how to use the dimension of the ground,” Raina commented while interacting with Aakash Chopra on Viacom18 Sports.
“He is a Mumbai player and he knows how to play red-ball cricket. I think he has a big chance – playing Test cricket will give him a new establishment in ODIs and some stability too. He will score several 100s and then 200s,” he added.
The upcoming series will be keenly followed by cricket aficionados as it will decide India’s fate at the World Test Championship (WTC). India is currently second in the WTC table behind Australia and a series win will help them consolidate a place in the top battle.
