Will Joe Root return as England captain for Rawalpindi Test? Batter Reveal | Cricket

On the eve of their first test against Pakistan in Rawalpindi, England are in disarray after 13 to 14 staffers, including half of the 16-man squad, fell ill on Wednesday. England had announced their playing XI for the match a day before the scheduled start of the match (1 December); however, a majority of players in the XI now have a viral infection. In fact, only five England players – Harry Brook, Zak Crawley, Keaton Jennings, Ollie Pope and Joe Root – turned up for training at Pindi Cricket Stadium on Wednesday.

The rest of the team members, including captain Ben Stokes, remained at the hotel.

Root also attended the press conference on the eve of the Test match and when asked if he could take the captain’s role if Stokes doesn’t get fit in time, Root said: “I don’t think so. Ollie Pope did the job in the warm-up and would do a great job.”

Joe Root had resigned as England’s Test captain earlier this year after admitting it had taken a toll on him.

“I’ve enjoyed leading my country, but lately it’s become clear to me how much of a toll it’s taken on me and the impact it’s had on me when I’m away from the game,” Root said in a statement. he announced his resignation in April.

“It was the most challenging decision I have had to make in my career,” 31-year-old Root continued, “but after discussing this with my family and those closest to me; I know the timing is right it.”

This will be England’s first Test tour in Pakistan in 17 years; the side had previously toured the country for the seven-match T20I series ahead of the T20 World Cup, and also met Pakistan in the final of the major tournament where England had secured a five-wicket win.
