‘Seedha 155 se 135 khelne ata hai batsman…’: Arshdeep’s brilliant take on Umran | Cricket

Arshdeep Singh and Umran Malik have had quite similar rises in Indian cricket. Both were fast-tracked to the Indian side with limited overs after one breakthrough in the IPL season. Malik made his India T20I debut in June this year against Ireland, while Arshdeep made his first international appearance in England less than two weeks later. Arshdeep has since quickly become one of India’s go-to bowlers after surpassing veterans Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami in Australia’s T20 World Cup. Umran, although not selected for the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup, is back in the mix right after the world event.

Despite their similar, largely similar rise in Indian cricket, Arshdeep and Umran are vastly different as fast bowlers. The left arm relies on swing with the new ball and has the ability to bowl accurate yorkers towards the end. Umran, on the other hand, is a thoroughly fast bowler, exceeding 150 km/h quite regularly. Many former Indian cricketers believe that Arshdeep and Umran can form the core of India’s fast-bowling unit in the future.

As fate would have it, the talented young sailors made their ODI debut together in the first game against New Zealand in Auckland a few days ago. Arshdeep’s ODI debut didn’t quite go to plan as the Punjab youngster made 68 runs in his 8.1 overs without taking a wicket. However, Umran blew fire into the middle overs. J&K’s right arm pacer broke the 90 mph mark at least four times and got the wickets from Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell.

Umran k saath mahoul kafi accha rehta hai. Usko hasi mazak kaafi pasand hai. Aur jaha tak bowling ki baat hai, Mujhe advantage mil jata hai kyuki 155 se sidha 135 jab khelne ata hai batsman toh decieve ho jata hai toh kaafi pace se. (It’s quite fun with Umran around. Like me, he also likes to joke. Regarding bowling, I get a lot of benefits [when he’s bowling at the other end] as batters are tricked into playing 84 mph after his 95 mph deliveries). We enjoy ourselves both on and off the field. We will try to continue this partnership off the pitch as well,” Arshdeep said when asked about his partnership with Umran Malik at the press conference ahead of the third and final against New Zealand.

The 23-year-old said that while ODIs and T20Is are largely similar, one needs to be more patient and prepared to take a backseat in the 50-overs game.

“ODI is a long game, partnerships play a key role, just like batting, in bowling, partnership is also important. I watch my partner bowl on the other side. If he bowls well, get more out then I will trying to stop the runs to help him. At the end of the day it’s a team sport. If I attack, my partner on the other side will go on the defensive.”
