England striker Harry Kane scored his 266th goal for Tottenham Hotspurs, giving them a 1–0 win over Fulham and equaling Jimmy Greaves’ record of most goals for the club. Just before half-time, Kane spectacularly tied the record by dodging Tim Ream on the edge of the Fulham box and launching a thunderous effort into the corner. Informed that a win would move Fulham to fifth position, ahead of their underperforming opponents, Fulham got off to a promising start. However, they were unable to capitalize on their early lead and Spurs quickly took control.
After a dull second half, Kane’s header from close range was saved by Bernd Leno, denying him the chance to add a second goal and break Greaves’ record. However, Spurs won only their second win in six Premier League games this season, cutting the gap to fourth-placed Manchester United to three points.
Although Fulham are still in seventh place, their loss was compounded by the sight of Aleksandar Mitrovic needing help to leave the field after injuring his ankle in a collision with Eric Dier. Spurs striker Harry Kane said after the game that he and his teammates had a “great conversation” with manager Antonio Conte to discuss how to turn around Tottenham’s recent losses to Arsenal and Manchester City.
I needed a win like that after some difficult results. Very proud to equal Jimmy Greaves’ record, looking for another one to break it now! pic.twitter.com/wutoucU7tC— Harry Kane (@HKane) January 23, 2023
“We had a good meeting between ourselves and the manager this week, just to talk amongst ourselves, to get back to what we are good at. We keep fighting. The manager is really passionate and we just have to keep working hard for him” said Kane quoted by Sky Sports.
The following weekend, Fulham will focus on the FA Cup as they take on Sunderland in a game starting at 3pm on Saturday. The following Friday, the West Londoners return to the Premier League with a West London derby away from Chelse. Before hosting Wolves on February 24, the Cottagers play Nottingham Forest and visit Brighton.
Tottenham Hotspur will play against Preston of the Championship in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday. On Super Sunday, the Spurs will receive Manchester City at home. After two challenging away trips to Leicester and AC Milan later in February, Antonio Conte’s team will host two London derbies against West Ham and Chelsea. (with ANI inputs)
