Netherlands vs Qatar Highlights: Netherlands qualifies for World Cup Round of 16 as Group A topper | Football news

NEW DELHI: The Netherlands qualified for the Round of 16 of the 2022 FIFA World Cup after finishing Group A on top with an easy 2-0 victory over hosts Qatar at Al Bayt Stadium on Tuesday.
Qatar, already eliminated, became the first host to lose all three group matches in football’s biggest event.
Cody Gakpo opened the Netherlands’ account in the 26th minute when he scored his third goal in as many games Frankie Young extended the lead five minutes into the second half.

Gakpo’s powerful attack in the 26th minute came on passes from Memphis Depay and Davy Klaassen, and De Jong was quickest to react in the 50th minute when Depay’s shot from close range was well saved by Qatar goalkeeper Meshaal Barsham.
The Dutch, who finished with seven points from their three group matches, are joined in the last 16 by Senegal, who knocked Ecuador out by beating them 2-1 to finish second with six points.
Davy Klaassen played an inviting ball in the 23-year-old’s path and he received it in pace, cutting through the heart of the defense before sending a well-placed shot past Meshaal Bersham to open the scoring in the 26th minute.
Four minutes into the second half, the Orange struck again as a cross from Klaassen found its way to Depay and the Qatari defense was caught when his shot was saved, allowing Frenkie de Jong to bundle it into the net.
With Qatar lacking the quality to pull off a comeback, an Orange goal was disallowed after Gakpo was ruled to have handed the ball in the build-up, but they still went on to win.
The Netherlands have finished second at the World Cup three times and also finished third in 2014, while Qatar made its tournament debut.
The Netherlands failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.
