MS Dhoni sues HC for contempt proceedings against IPS officer | Cricket News

Cricketer MS Dhoni has prompted the Madras High Court to initiate contempt proceedings and subpoena IPS officer G Sampath Kumar for his alleged statements against the Supreme Court and certain senior advisers in the match-fixing case. The case was reported but was not heard today.

In 2014, Dhoni filed a civil suit to permanently bar Sampath Kumar, the then Inspector General of Police, from making a statement linking him (Dhoni) to match-fixing and spot-fixing of matches. He prayed the court to order him to pay Rs 100 crore in damages.

By an interim injunction passed on March 18, 2014, the court prevented Sampath Kumar from making a statement against Dhoni. Despite the injunction, Sampath Kumar reportedly filed an affidavit to the Supreme Court with disparaging remarks against the judiciary and the senior counsel representing the state in the cases against him. When notified to the Madras High Court, it included the same in its file in December 2021.

After getting permission from Attorney General R. Shanmugasundaram to file the contempt petition on July 18 this year, Dhoni preferred the current contempt petition on October 11 this year to punish Sampath Kumar for his alleged action of the making remarks against the judiciary in violation of the court interlocutory judgment passed in 2014.
