‘Iyer ahead of Samson, what a joke!’: Hardik, Laxman slammed for selection | Cricket

Sanju Samson was expected to return to the Indian side for the second T20I match against New Zealand at Mount Maunganui on Sunday. Lack of opportunities saw Samson miss the Asia Cup tournament and the T20 World Cup, but with selectors calling him back for the New Zealand tour and India wanting to make a fresh start after the disappointment in Australia, it was expected that he would get a chance in the very first game. But his exclusion from the playing XI infuriated fans with captain Hardik Pandya and substitute coach VVS Laxman. (India vs New Zealand Live Score 2nd T20)

Samson was back for a spot in India’s World Cup in April, before the start of the IPL, when the team played their home series. Regular skipper Rohit Sharma was impressed with Samson’s decisiveness. But the youngster was offered limited opportunities after the IPL, eventually dropping him from the Asia Cup and T20 World Cup squads.

However, Samson was called back for the New Zealand tour and fans expected his return to the playing XI. But the wait continued as Hardik selected Shreyas Iyer and Deepak Hooda as the middle order hitters and Rishabh Pant as the primary wicket-keeper. The call left fans frustrated and here are some of the tweets…

“It’s exciting to get a game, a real 20-over game. We still need to assess the conditions and see how the wicket behaves. If the wicket doesn’t help you, and you’re trying to play shots and take wickets lose, and if it doesn’t rain, you may be in a difficult position. We will assess the situation, and if it rains, we will reassess,” said Hardik after losing the toss. India were then brought to bat first where they scored 50 for one before rain stopped play in the seventh over.
