IPL 2023 Retention: Kolkata Knight Riders left with small wallets, big holes | Cricket news

KOLKATA: Kolkata Knight Riders seem to be in the mood for a full overhaul of their overseas contingent as they released six of the 15 total ahead of the IPL mini-auction set to take place in Kochi on December 23.
KKR continued to have faith in old warhorses Sunil Narine and Andre Russell, despite both not playing much cricket in the past year. KKR found themselves in a sticky situation after three of their leading stars Pat Cummins, Sam Billings and Alex Hales opted out of next year’s tournament. They now have three overseas slots to fill.

However, they have already spent huge sums trading New Zealand pacers Lockie Ferguson and Gujarat Titans Afghan wicketkeeper batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz. So, after the publication of the final retention list on Tuesday, Shah Rukh Khan’s co-ownership franchise is left with the smallest purse among the 10 lots at Rs 7.05 crore.
Among the domestic players, KKR abolished Ajinkya Rahane, who they bought for Rs 1 crore last year. The Mumbai batsman, who played just seven games and scored 133 runs, led Mumbai to their first Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 encounter last month, but big runs eluded him.

Remaining wallets

With the release of pacer Shivam Mavi, KKR finally ended three emerging talents from the 2018 U-19 World Cup after Shubman Gill and Kamlesh Nagarkoti left over the years. It seems that team management finally ran out of patience with Mavi, who was regularly injured and went on to take 30 wickets in 32 appearances for the franchise.
KKR will also have to look for a quality domestic wicketkeeper in the auction after releasing both Sheldon Jackson and Baba Indrajith. KKR’s quest for a permanent top spot will continue after they tried different combinations last season, but to no avail. Now that there are no Finch, Hales and Rahane, the search is sure to continue in the auction.
