IPL 2023: Chennai Super Kings need long-term captain as MS Dhoni’s final season says former IPL board member Pragyan Ojha | Cricket news

Former India spinner and Indian Premier League Governing Council member Pragyan Ojha said on Tuesday (November 15) that Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will look for a long-term captain as current skipper MS Dhoni completes his final season for the franchise during the Indian Premier League 2023. The four-time champions CSK appointed Ravindra Jadeja as their next captain, but he retired midway during IPL 2022 and Dhoni captained the side for the remainder of the season. The franchise has retained the star all-rounder for next season, but it is unlikely he will regain the captaincy role.

With age not on his side, it looks like 41-year-old Dhoni will in all likelihood have his last season during IPL 2023. “… you asked me a year earlier, I would have thought, maybe Kane Williamson but whatever i also know from CSK if this is MS Dhoni’s last year they would like to pass the captaincy to a person who can fill the role for the next 5-6 years and bring stability to the team CSK is one such team that doesn’t believe in many changes and would therefore be looking for a long-term captain,” Ojha said on JioCinema. “CSK is like a blue-chip team and not a day trader,” he added.

Ojha also said that it became clear last year that Dhoni will remain captain of CSK until he plays. “Until the time MS Dhoni plays, there can be no other captain. Last year that became all the clearer,” he says.

After last year’s dismal showing in which they failed to reach the play-offs, the MS Dhoni-led side will try to make amends during IPL 2023. CSK decided to keep all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who is halfway through the IPL 2022- season ended with captaincy.
