In 1999, Anjum Chopra had hit one hundred and fifty when India defeated England 2-1. In short, it was skipper Harmanpreet Kaur’s combative 141 that laid the foundation for India’s historic triumph.
Harman’s attack helped India hit a record total of 333 for 5. It was the Indian captain’s fifth ODI century and Harleen Deol also took part in her first ODI fifty.
After being invited by England to bat first, India lost opener Shafali Verma in the second over, as the batter again failed to secure a big inning.
The batter crossed two boundaries in the first and appeared to be en route to a big score, but was bowled clean by Kate Cross.
Kate made an excellent start to her 50th ODI, with Shafali sacked for eight runs in her first over, leaving India 12/1 in the second over of the match.
Yastika Bhatia made her way to the crease, stitching a key 54-run partnership with in-form Smriti Mandhana to deny the hosts every wicket until the 10th over, making the score a healthy 60/1 at the 10- over-mark.
Both batters kept tapping the scoreboard at a good pace and scored boundaries on a regular basis. Mandhana also completed 3000 ODI runs and became the fastest Indian woman to get there.
Charlotte Dean then sent Yastika Bhatia over in the 12th to give England a much-needed break as the pair threatened to take the game away from the hosts.
But Harmanpreet made sure that those small setbacks won’t affect India’s journey to a big one.
It was a daunting task for England and apart from Danni Wyatt (65 out of 58), no other batter really raised their hands. There were a couple of 30’s, but those punches weren’t really helpful when the team was chasing a goal close to 7 runs per over.
