India vs New Zealand 2022: Kane Williamson has ‘high hopes’ for Umran Malik in T20I series, says THIS about Sunriser’s Hyderabad teammate | Cricket news

Just a few days after the conclusion of the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, Hardik Pandya-led Team India will begin a three-match T20I series against New Zealand’s Kane Williamson later this week. While top Indian cricketers like Virat Kohli and regular skipper Rohit Sharma have been given a break from this series, young talent like Williamson’s Sunrisers Hyderabad teammate Umran Malik and batsmen like Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan will make a comeback for the T20 games.

IPL 2022 was a breakthrough season for Umran Malik, who took 22 wickets in 14 matches earlier this year at an average of just 22.5 with also a career best of 5/25. Umran’s performances propelled him to the international T20 team when he made his T20I debut against Ireland earlier this year.

“Umran Malik is a great talent. It’s great to see him in international cricket now. I have high hopes for him now that he has been selected for the Indian squad for this upcoming series,” Williamson said during a media interaction hosted by Amazon Prime Video on Tuesday (Nov. 15), ahead of the India vs New Zealand series.

Both India and New Zealand ended their T20 World Cup 2022 campaign with losses to England and Pakistan respectively in the semi-finals. India is now led by all-rounder Hardik Pandya who led Gujarat Titans to the IPL 2022 title in their debut season.

“Hardik is a superstar of the game and one of the most sought after match winners in the world. He has had great success as a captain at the IPL level. India has some great players in this squad that I also know personally. Hardik will benefit from the support of Virat (Kohli) and Rohit (Sharma) in the future,” Williamson said of his opponent Hardik Pandya.

Asked about playing English cricket after Jos Buttler’s side won the 2022 T20 World Cup, Williamson said: “There are so many high quality T20 sides around the world. On any given day, anyone can beat anyone, as we have seen in the World Cup. England are a strong team with a lot of depth and play an aggressive form of cricket. I see the game evolving, but it also goes around in circles.”
