India Tour Bangladesh 2022-23

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja will not be available for the upcoming three-match ODI series in Bangladesh as he has not yet fully recovered from knee surgery he underwent in September.

ESPNcricinfo understands that Shahbaz Ahmed, the Bangladeshi all-rounder, is likely to be named as Jadeja’s replacement for the ODI series which begins in Mirpur on December 4.

Shahbaz, who made his international debut during the home ODIs against South Africa in September, is currently part of the Indian ODI squad for New Zealand’s three-match series. He was in prolific form in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, taking 11 wickets in six matches at an economy of 4.87 over 51.2 overs. He also contributed two half-centuries lower in the league with the bat.

Jadeja’s inclusion was subject to condition, as confirmed by chief selector Chetan Sharma, at the time of the team’s announcement. If he is not ready to line up for the two-Test series to follow, it is likely that Uttar Pradesh left arm spinner Saurabh Kumar could be included in the touring party.

Saurabh has been in the fringes of the national team since February last year, having had excellent results since the 2019-2020 Ranji Trophy. More recently, he was part of the India A side against New Zealand, where he took nine wickets in the final match of the series to help the hosts to a 1–0 win in the series. Before that, he played a key role in UP’s run to the semi-finals of the Ranji Trophy.

In total, Saurabh has an impressive 58 wickets across 12 Ranji Trophy matches from two completed seasons. One of Saurabh’s USPs according to a member of the outgoing selection committee is his ability to drive away tirelessly and bowl for long periods.

Jadeja, 33, had to leave the India Cup campaign after the group stage to undergo surgery due to a long-term knee injury. While India coach Rahul Dravid initially hoped that Jadeja would recover in time to play a part in India’s T20 World Cup campaign, he ended up missing the entire tournament.

It wasn’t the first time Jadeja had suffered a problem with his right knee, as an injury to the same joint forced him to miss the ODI leg of India’s West Indies tour in July. He has since undergone rehab at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.

Jadeja was eventually named in both the ODI and Test squads for the Bangladesh tour, but will now miss at least the limited matches scheduled for December 4, 7 and 10.
