Ind vs Pak – 2022 T20 World Cup – Shami picked Harshal to get wickets up front

“I think the main reason Shami Harshal is ahead of Patel is to get wickets up front,” Kumble said on ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out show. “That’s what Rohit is hoping for. With Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Shami to get a few wickets early on.”

Shami, who hadn’t played a single T20I since last year’s World Cup, was brought into India’s squad after Jasprit Bumrah was out with an injury and left just one in their warm-up match against Australia. That over was the 20th left of Australia’s chase, and Shami made an immediate impact with three wickets.

India also chose offspinner R Ashwin over legpinner Yuzvendra Chahal and Kumble said the reason could be to ensure more depth of strike.

“If you look at Harshal not being part of the team, the batting would have stopped at number 7 with Chahal in it. India thought we needed a deep batting order because the way they have built their T20 innings now with the batting is a little bit more positive, a little bit more intent, and if you have to have that kind of approach, you have to have the longer batting order,” Kumble said. “So that’s one of the reasons they went with Ashwin. And experience too.”

He also explained what might be India’s combination in the death overs. “By death, Arshdeep two, Bhuvi one and Shami one, those will be your last four overs.”

India open their T20 World Cup campaign against Pakistan to a packed house at the MCG. They are in Group 2 of the Super 12s, along with Bangladesh, South Africa, Zimbabwe and the Netherlands.
