‘He’s definitely…’: Karthik backs T20I outcast to play for India at World Cup 2023 | Cricket

After Team India closed out the T20I series in their favor, the focus now shifts to one of the game’s purest formats as the visitors are poised to resume their rivalry with hosts New Zealand in the One Day Internationals (ODIS) . Led by substitute skipper Hardik Pandya, Team India recorded a 1-0 victory over New Zealand in the shortest format.

With Pandya resting for the ODI series, veteran opener Shikhar Dhawan will lead the Rohit Sharma deprived side in the three-match series against New Zealand. Dhawan-led Team India will meet New Zealand’s Kane Williamson in the 1st ODI at Auckland’s Eden Park on Friday. Ahead of the ODI series opener, veteran Indian batsman Dinesh Karthik supported stand-in skipper Dhawan to be part of Team India at the 2023 ODI World Cup.

“From the kind of vibe I get, he’s definitely a starter for the World Cup; otherwise they wouldn’t have him around. He’s clearly on the other side of 30. They could easily move away from him. Just the fact that they have him shows that they are very keen to have him on the ODI team and he has been a weapons player in ICC tournaments, one who rises to the occasion and he has consistently played at a fair clip, Karthik told me. Cricbuzz.

Karthik, who was the oldest member of the Indian team at the 2022 ICC World T20, also highlighted Dhawan’s exploits in the 2019 edition of the 50-over World Cup. Dhawan hit a match-winning ton against Australia at the Oval before the Indian opener was ruled out of the 2019 World Cup with a thumb injury.

“Even in the 2019 World Cup he was doing really well until he got injured. So he’s someone you can count on unless something drastic changes in terms of his form completely falling out. He is someone you can trust as an opener, knows his game plan and uses his crease really well,” added Karthik.
