Hardik has been touted as a possible successor to Rohit Sharma, at least in T20Is, following India’s semi-final exit at the T20 World Cup last month. Over time, he has also gained some captaincy experience. In May, he guided debutants Gujarat Titans to their first IPL crown and then led India for the first time in T20Is on a tour of Ireland for a 2-0 series win. More recently, he led India to a 1-0 victory in the T20Is in New Zealand in the absence of senior players such as Rohit, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul.
“Hardik Pandya is clearly in line,” Gambhir said at an event organized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) in New Delhi on Sunday. “But that will be a shame for Rohit because I think judging his captaincy in just one ICC event is not the right way to probably judge him.”
In March of this year, Shaw reportedly failed a yo-yo test. His score of less than 15 was far from the BCCI-mandated minimum score of 16.5 for men.
Having made his Test debut in 2018, the same year he led India to the Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand, Shaw has managed to play just four more Tests. Shaw’s limited appearances were also sporadic. He last played for India in July 2021 when he was part of a second-tier squad that toured Sri Lanka for three ODIs and as many T20Is.
“The reason I chose Prithvi Shaw is that I know a lot of people talk about his off-field activities, but that’s the job of the coach and the selectors,” said Gambhir. “The selectors’ job is not just to choose the 15, but also to get people on the right path.
“Prithvi Shaw is someone who I think can be a very aggressive captain, a very successful captain because you see that aggression in the way someone plays the sport.”
His form in the 50-over competition, the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy, was patchy, with his only two half-centuries coming against the inexperienced Mizoram and Railways. Overall, he only scored 217 runs in seven innings at an average of 31. He was overshadowed by fellow chief executive Yashasvi Jaiswal, who made 396 runs in six innings to top the charts ahead of Mumbai, who retired in the front quarter. -final.
Over time, Shaw has gained some captaincy experience with Mumbai other than captaining India Under-19. At junior level, he managed a number of players, many of whom are currently regulars in the IPL.
