Finding a place in the Indian team is quite a challenge: Sanju Samson

The goalkeeper batsman believes that he has prepared himself so much in recent years that no one calls him a one-dimensional cricketer. His exclusion from the World Cup left fans outraged but the Kerala batter said he understands it’s harder than ever to get into the national team’s elite 15 with the quality of players that make Indian cricket today .

The 27-year-old keeper added that the demands of the game must be one of flexibility to be successful. “Playing different roles is something I’ve worked on for many years. I’m confident I can hit anywhere in the order,” PTI quoted Samson as saying.

“You shouldn’t arrange a place for yourself. You can’t tell people, ‘I’m an opener or I’m a finisher.’ Over the past three to four years, playing in different roles and places (in order) has added a new dimension to my game,” he added.

The 27-year-old has always been in and out of the team and failed to find a regular spot as he has played in 7 ODIs and 16 T20Is so far. The selectors have been criticized several times by fans for failing to pick the Kerala power-hitter, but Samson stated that finding a place in the Indian team is challenging and there is a lot of competition.

“It’s going to be really challenging. Finding a place in the Indian team is really challenging. There’s a lot of competition, even within players who are on the team now. When these things happen, it’s important to focus on myself .” said Samson. “I’m happy with the way I’m performing. I want to improve…”, he added.

Samson will lead India A in the three List A matches against New Zealand A, starting at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai from Thursday (September 22).

“The quality of the cricketers we have on our team is unbelievable. So it really helps everyone to raise their level. We keep challenging ourselves. We try to perform every time we get the chance,” said Samson.

The A series always keeps the fringe players in the roster radar and on leading the India A team, Samson said it’s important to take advantage of the opportunities. “They (India A-games) are really important. There’s not much difference between an A-game and an international game. The competition is almost the same, so it’s important to take advantage of the opportunities,” agreed Samson.
