FIFA World Cup 2022: The Netherlands beats Qatar 2-0 and storms into the eighth finals undefeated | Football news

Strikes from Cody Gakpo and Frenkie de Jong sent the Netherlands to the round of 16 and to the top of their Group A table after a 2-0 win over hosts Qatar in the ongoing FIFA World Cup at Al Bayt Stadium on Tuesday. Host nation Qatar recorded their third consecutive defeat, leaving the Netherlands to finish the group with seven points after two wins and a draw of the tournament without gaining a single point.

The Netherlands entered the game as favourites, and got off to a great start as they penetrated Qatar’s defence. In the fourth minute of the game, Memphis Depay aimed brilliantly at goal, but his shot was blocked by Meshaal Barsham. Louis Van Gaal’s men made their attacking intentions clear with their early attempts on goal.
The Dutch continued to enjoy possession, but the hosts, who had already been eliminated from the tournament, could not get the ball with their feet. However, despite the Dutch trips to the Qatar box, the first 20 minutes of the match at Al Bayt Stadium remained goalless.

Star attacker Cody Gakpo put the Dutchman ahead after a pass from Davy Klaassen in the bottom right corner. In the 26th minute the score was 1-0 in favor of the LVG men. The flying Dutchman became the first Dutch player to score in each of his first 3 games at football’s showpiece. Marten de Roon also shot at Qatar’s post, but his volley went over the crossbar in the 41st minute. At halftime the score was 1-0 in favor of the Netherlands.

The Dutch continued their dominance of the match in the second half, with Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong scoring one in the 49th minute to double the lead. While Qatar had more possession in the second half, the Orange did not let go of the pedal. In the 62nd minute, Qatar introduced Al Haydos, Madibo and Ali as substitutes for Boudiaf, Muntari and Ali Asad. The Netherlands also made some changes, with Klassen and Depay replacing Berghuis Waste and Janssen with still half an hour to play.

Steven Berghuis tapped home for Dutch to make it 3-0 for his side, but a video review saw a handball from Cody about 30 seconds before it went in and his shot disallowed as a goal in the 68th minute. However, there was no twist in the story as the Netherlands cruised to victory, with the score 2-0 in favor of the Dutch at the final whistle.
