FIFA World Cup 2022 Switzerland vs Cameroon: Breel Embolo strikes as Switzerland beat Cameroon 1-0 | Football news

Breel Embolo scored against his native country – Cameroon – as Switzerland en route to a 1-0 victory in their World Cup Group G match at Al Janoub Stadium on Thursday. Embolo refused to celebrate after his team’s opening goal and stood still with an apologetic face.
The 25-year-old scored a cross from Xherdan Shaqiri to give the Swiss the lead in the 48th minute.
Embolo was born in Yaounde (the capital of Cameroon) but grew up in Basel.
Switzerland and Cameroon were 0-0 at halftime.
Cameroon were the better side in the first half and might have been in the lead as Karl Toko Ekambi, Eric-Maxim Choupo-Moting and Martin Hongla all missed good chances against a mediocre Swiss side struggling to get out of first gear.
But the Swiss were much better in the second period and took the lead through a well-developed goal from Embolo. Ruben Vargas missed an excellent chance to score a second but was thwarted by goalkeeper Andre Onana as Cameroon ran out of steam.
