2022 FIFA World Cup: Goals from Boulaye Dia, Famara Diedhiou and Bamba Dieng helped Senegal secure a convincing 3-1 victory over hosts Qatar in the Group A match to be played at Al Thumama Stadium. Mohammed Muntari scored the only goal for the hosts to become the first goalscorer for the country. Senegal also had more possession with 55 percent compared to Qatar, which had only 45.
The African side also had five shots on target compared to Qatar who had three. In the fourth minute, Ismaila Sarr’s Senegalese right-footed shot from a difficult angle on the right was close, but missed to the right. Eleven minutes later, Akram Afif of Qatar’s right footed shot from outside the box went over the goal post.
20 minutes in, Qatar’s Ismaeel Mohammad got himself booked for a foul. Four minutes later, Krepin Diatta’s assist helped Idrissa Gueye with a right footed shot from outside the box, but the effort went wide. Qatar’s umpteenth effort went high when Abdelkarim Hassan’s left footed shot from outside the box went high. In the 30th minute, Edouard Mendy Senegal’s assist helped Ismaila Sarr take a right footed shot from outside the box, but it was saved in the bottom left corner.
In the 41st minute, Boulaye Dia’s right footed shot from the center of the box to the bottom left corner helped Senegal take a 1–0 lead, which they held until half-time.

Senegal also looked more convincing in the second half by scoring a goal in the 48th minute. Mohammed Muntari pulled one goal back for Qatar by scoring in the 78th minute. On a pass from Ismaeel Mohammad with a cross, Muntari headed from the center of the box into the bottom left corner.
Muntari became the first goalscorer for his country in the FIFA World Cup. His goal made the fans burst into joy. But the home fans’ joy was short-lived, as Bamba Dieng restored another two-goal lead for Senegal six minutes later.
