Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo became the first footballer to score in five different FIFA World Cups, first earning and then converting a controversial penalty against Ghana in their group stage match of the 2022 FIFA World Cup on Thursday (Nov. 24). Ghanaian coach Otto Addo felt that Ghanaian defender Mohammed Salisu did not foul Ronaldo for the penalty, complaining that the referees did not use VAR to make sure. Salisu’s thigh appeared to make light contact with Ronaldo’s leg before the Portugal captain fell sprawling to the ground.
During the presentation of the 2022 FIFA World Cup Qatar at the VISA Match Center, Ronaldo’s former Manchester United teammates Wayne Rooney and Luis Figo discussed the controversial penalty during Portugal’s win against Ghana. Rooney expressed doubts over Portugal’s controversial penalty in last night’s match against Ghana.
The penalty kick helped Portugal break the deadlock and in the process Ronaldo also became the first player in world football history to score goals in each of his 5 editions of the tournament he has played. Ronaldo’s former teammate Luis Figo was also not convinced.
During the VISA Match Center on Sports18 and JioCinema, the two legends discussed the penalty. “It didn’t look like a penalty to me, but it was welcome,” said Figo.
“No, I think Cristiano used all his experience as a striker in that position and used his experience to win the penalty and that’s good play, good midfield,” added Wayne Rooney.
The 37-year-old Ronaldo, who started what was expected to be his last World Cup, converted the penalty for his piece of history. “I think it was really the wrong decision,” Addo said. “I don’t know why VAR wasn’t mentioned. There is no explanation for me. And then it is difficult against a world-class team when they are in the lead.”
Addo is a 47-year-old former Ghanaian player who has his first international coaching job and his first World Cup. He said he even tried to meet Elfath after the game to ask him about the incident. Addo also complained that Elfath had missed numerous fouls on his players.
