AUS vs ENG 3rd ODI, WATCH: Jos Buttler furious with referee as Steve Smith holds his own despite getting out | Cricket news

England skipper Jos Buttler reacted very angrily after Steve Smith stood his ground after clearly being knocked out in the final ODI match between Australia and England at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). Smith, playing 21 from 15 balls, attempted to scoop it over the wicket-keeper’s head, but eventually touched the ball with his gloves. Next to England cricketers on the pitch, umpire Paul Wilson thought Smith would head for the pavilion, but the batsman held his ground until Buttler shouted ‘howzzat’ in an irritated manner, whereupon Wilson signaled Smith to get out.

Travis Head and David Warner led Australia to a 221-run rain-hit victory over England to secure a 3-0 win in the one-day international series that ended Tuesday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Australia’s opening pair scored 269 runs in front of just 10,406 spectators in the MCG.

Warner and Head’s centuries helped Australia post 355-5, the highest ODI total at the MCG after England captain Jos Buttler won the toss and was elected to field. Head hit 152 off 130 balls to complete his third ODI century and highest score in the format. Warner scored 106. Two rain delays during Australia’s innings reduced the match to 48 overs per side, with England’s target raised to 364. England were all out for 142 in the 32nd over as opener Jason Roy top-scored with 38.

Fast bowler Olly Stone, who only played in his sixth ODI, led the England bowlers with figures of 4-85. Australian legsspinner Adam Zampa had 4-31 to finish the series with 11 wickets.

“Good to finish them off here with just about the best ODI I’ve been a part of,” said Australia captain Pat Cummins,

Buttler said his side “came far short … I think Australia outsmarted us on every front.”

Australia won the first match in Adelaide by six wickets and the second at the Sydney Cricket Ground by 72 runs to tie the series ahead of the final match. (with PTI inputs)
