US whistleblower Edward Snowden gets a Russian passport: report

Exposing the extent of covert surveillance by the National Security Agency (NSA), former US intelligence contractor Edward Snowden has sworn an oath of allegiance to Russia and received a Russian passport, TASS reported Friday.

‘Yes, he has [a passport]he took the oath,” Anatoly Kucherena, Snowden’s attorney, told the state news agency TASS.

Snowden, 39, did not immediately respond to a message asking for comment on the report.

President Vladimir Putin in September granted Russian citizenship to Snowden, who fled the United States after leaking classified files exposing extensive wiretapping by the United States and its allies.

Snowden’s defenders praise him as a modern day dissident for exposing the extent of US espionage. Opponents say he is a traitor who put lives in danger by exposing the secret methods Western spies use to eavesdrop on enemy states and militants.
