Cody Gakpo scored towards the end of time, while substitute Davy Klaassen scored the second in stoppage time to beat Senegal 2–0 in their opening World Cup Group A game at Al Thumama Stadium.
The two sides struggled to break the deadlock late into the game, with the Dutch failing to score with several tries on goal.
“It was a difficult game and we were not careful with the ball… I think we can do much better, but of course the win gives us a good feeling. We were obviously looking for a goal and in the end we got it,” Gakpo said after the game.
The Netherlands will meet Ecuador in their second game on November 25, while Senegal will play against Qatar on the same day.
