The first comprehensive study to examine research on the mental health of children and young people using data from before and during COVID-19 found an effect on mental health that could lead to an increase in demand for support services. This is the first study to examine research that has information about young people’s mental health before and during the pandemic. The study is published in the Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry. The study provides more insight into changes in the mental health of children and young people of different ages around the world. Researchers gathered 51 studies that looked at the impact of the pandemic on young people’s mental health in a variety of areas. Crucially, these studies include baseline mental health information collected before the pandemic, rather than relying on retrospective perceptions of change.
