Minakshi defeated Ireland’s Magno from the Philippines 4-1 on Saturday in a 52kg women’s quarterfinal in Amman, Jordan. That secured her a medal in the prestigious event as all semi-finalists get a medal. Minakshi now hopes to win her fight in the last four stages to capture a better color medal.

Her compatriot Sakshi faced a stronger opponent when she lost 0-5 to Hsiao-Wen Huang of Chinese Taipei in the 54kg weight category quarterfinals, putting an end to her hopes of winning a medal.

Also on Saturday, five more Indian female boxers, including Tokyo Olympic bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain, will compete in their quarter-finals.

In addition to Lovlina, Preeti (57 kg), Parveen (63 kg), Ankushita (66 kg) and Pooja (70 kg) will fight their respective battles on Saturday.

Lovlina, who has changed her weight category from 69 kg, will appear in her first international tournament in the 75 kg weight category, as she competes in the ring against the 2016 world champion, Valentina Khalzova of Kazakhstan.

Late Friday night, Indian Ananta Chopade defeated Japan’s Tanaka Shogo 5-0 in a round of 16 fights in the 54kg weight category.

However, compatriot Etash Khan lost 2-3 to Thai Khunatip Pidnuch in a round of 16 fights in the 60kg weight class at the Asian Elite Boxing Championships.
