Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia did not want to participate in what he termed as Western exercises in “nuclear rhetoric”

The Kremlin said on Tuesday it did not want to participate in “nuclear rhetoric” spread by the West after a media report that Russia was preparing to show its willingness to use nuclear weapons in its conflict with Ukraine.

The Times newspaper reported Monday that NATO’s military alliance had warned members that President Vladimir Putin would demonstrate his willingness to use nuclear weapons by conducting a nuclear test on the border with Ukraine.

The London-based newspaper also said Russia had moved a train believed to be linked to a Defense Ministry unit responsible for nuclear munitions.

When asked about the Times report, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia did not want to participate in what he termed as Western exercises in “nuclear rhetoric”.

“The Western media, Western politicians and heads of state are currently doing a lot of exercises in nuclear rhetoric,” Peskov said. “We don’t want to get involved in this.”

Putin on September 21 ordered Russia’s first mobilization of military reservists since World War II to put more troops on the battlefield and backed a plan to annex parts of Ukraine, warning the West not to bluff when he said he would be ready. are to use nuclear weapons to defend Russia.

Russia is the world’s largest nuclear power by number of nuclear warheads: it has 5,977 nuclear warheads, while the United States has 5,428, according to the Federation of American Scientists.
