Kidambi Srikanth, Treesa-Gayatri Reach Semis; Satwik-Chirag crashes out

Ace Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth reached the semifinals of the Hylo Open 2022 BWF Super 300 tournament, beating Indonesia’s Jonatan Christie in the quarterfinals of the men’s singles, here on Friday.

The 29-year-old got off to a strong start against the seventh-ranked Indonesian by scoring nine of the last 11 points to win the first game. Jonatan, the 2018 Asian Games champion, made a late advance in the second game, but the Indian shuttler was able to finish the match 21-13 and 21-19 in 39 minutes.

World No.11 Srikanth will face fifth seed Anthony Ginting from Indonesia in the semifinals on Saturday. Ginting has won three of their previous five games against Srikanth, the last being at the All-England Open in March.

On the other hand, the young women’s doubles Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand defeated Chinese Taipei players Hsu Ya Ching and Lin Wan Ching in three matches in the quarterfinals. After two close games, the Chinese Taipei team was unable to keep up the pressure in the decider, as Jolly and Gopichand won 21-17, 18-21, 21-8.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games who win a bronze medal will face eighth seeded Benyapa Aimsaard and Thailand’s Nuntakarn Aimsaard on Saturday.

However, the in-form Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy, currently the world No. 8, lost their quarter-finals in the men’s doubles against England’s seventh seeded pair Ben Lane and Sean Vendy. The Indian doubles duo went 17-21, 14-21 and dropped out of the tournament.

In women’s singles, the world’s number 39 Malvika Bansod, who defeated Scotland’s Kirsty Gilmour in the pre-quarter final, also lost to 21st Indonesia’s Gregoria Mariska Tunjung 17-21, 10-21 in the last eight in 33 minutes.
