After delivering one of the biggest blockbusters of the year with Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, actor Kartik Aaryan is gearing up for the release of his second performance of the year. The film, titled Freddy, will see the actor play a shy and lonely dentist, who turns into a cold-blooded and obsessive killer at night.
In an exclusive chat with News18, Kartik recalls the time when a fan became almost obsessed with him and ended up at his building. He recalls the incident and says, “There was a case where a girl framed a picture where she and I were a married couple. She brought it and stood under my house holding it claiming that we are both married. I didn’t get to know it until much later. That was a bit creepy. I thought, ‘Kya ho kya raha hai (laughs)!’” But does he have an obsession in his life? “I’m just obsessed with my movies, my work and Katori (his dog),” says the 32-year-old.
Known for his boy-next-door and loverboy image – thanks to the Pyaar Ka Punchnama series, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety (2018), Luka Chuppi and Pati Patni Aur Woh (both 2019) – Freddy will see Kartik in a rather different light. However, he reveals that he was not afraid to play an unpredictable, dark and menacing role in the film.
“I wasn’t worried about how the audience would react to my role. They are very smart. We had released a mini clip from the movie that was about 45 seconds to a minute, but they picked up little things from it and really enjoyed it. I was glad they paid attention to those things because I also watch movies as an audience. I also like to be shocked and excited,” he explains.
The Love Aaj Kal 2 (2020) and Dhamaka (2021) actor further adds, “I saw it as a great addition to my filmography. I loved the script and was completely absorbed in it. I thought of nothing else before signing it. All I know is that audiences will enjoy a good movie regardless of genre.”
Ask him about his reaction after seeing himself in the teaser and Kartik excitedly comments, “I was really happy and I was happier with the reaction we got. I felt validated. I’m lucky enough to do a Freddy and a Shehzada back-to-back, both of which are completely opposite to each other.
Directed by Shashanka Ghosh also stars Alaya F, who is introduced in the film as ‘Freddy’s obsession’. As the thriller marks her second appearance after Jawaani Jaaneman (2020), Kartik shares that he was quite ‘motivated’ watching Alaya’s performance. He says, “She is someone who wants to keep improving herself and be the best. It is quite inspiring to see someone work so hard.”
He praised her, adding, ‘I didn’t know Alaya before we started working on Freddy, but I knew she’s a talented actor. When I met her, I realized that she is like a sincere student. She pushes herself to the optimal point. Until she’s 100 percent sure, she’ll keep doing a scene. This is a special quality that many actors don’t have.”
Freddy is scheduled for a December 2 release exclusively on Disney+ Hotstar.
