Portugal are through to the next round of the 2022 FIFA World Cup thanks to a Bruno Fernandes double as they beat Uruguay 2-0 on Monday. The midfielder put his team ahead from outside the box in the second half before converting a penalty to seal the deal.

However, Fernandes’ first goal has created a storm on social media. And note how good it was (it was indeed a beautiful goal). The way he gave Portugal the lead has divided opinion.
Why do you ask that?
Well, Fernandes first attempt was not on the left. Indeed, he had provided a perfect cross for his teammate Cristiano Ronaldo who soared high in an attempt to head the ball into the net.
The ball did indeed land in goal and Ronaldo began to celebrate wildly with his teammates circling around him. However, it was soon announced that the goal was awarded to Fernandes, as the referees ruled that Ronaldo was not touched.
All Ronaldo could do after hearing the announcement was grant an awkward smile.
Coincidentally for Fernandes. Bad luck for Ronaldo.
Here, make your own judgement.
Fernandes, who also played alongside Ronaldo at Manchester United before his controversial exit, downplayed his starring role in the win.
“What’s important is that we got through to the next round and very important was the victory against a strong opponent,” he said. “Our goal is to think game after game and we have to do our best because we clearly want to win all games.”
Portugal coach Fernando Santos was full of praise for his team.
“We have clearly shown that we are a very strong unit, both in the quality of the game and in the relationship between us,” Santos said. “This is how positive things are achieved. We will always work like this.”
