Aaftab Amin Poonawala, who allegedly killed his girlfriend Shraddha Walkar and dismembered her body into 35 pieces before dumping them in forested areas of Delhi and Haryana, claimed on Tuesday that his actions were ‘not intentional’.
Aaftab killed his live-in partner “in the heat of battle,” his lawyer said as he appeared before Saket court in Delhi after his five-day police detention expired on Tuesday. The court extended his police detention to four days.
“What happened happened in the heat of the moment,” Aaftab’s representative argued, adding that his client had since “fully cooperated” with police.
The lawyer also told the court that Aaftab had trouble remembering the incident.
The suspect allegedly strangled and dismembered the body of his live-in partner Shraddha Walker in May this year.
Delhi Police solved the six-month-old blind murder case and arrested Poonawalla on Shraddha’s father’s complaint. Aftab and Shraddha met on a dating site and later moved in together in a rented house in Chhatarpur.
Interrogation by the Delhi Police revealed that Aftab Poonawala had killed Shraddha on 18 May and later started making plans to dispose of her body. He told police he had read up on human anatomy so it could help him cut off the body.
Police said Aftab, after searching Google in shop mode, removed blood stains from the floor with some chemicals and disposed of stained clothing. He moved the body to the bathroom and bought a refrigerator from a nearby store. He later chopped the body into small pieces and put them in the refrigerator.
Aaftab’s polygraph test likely today
A court on Tuesday authorized Delhi police to conduct a lie detector test on Aaftab Amin Poonawala. Delhi police had taken the request to court on Monday.
“Yes. We have received permission from Delhi court to conduct lie detector test on Poonawala,” a police official told PTI
Delhi police have already approached the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) to conduct a lie detector test on Poonawala, FSL sources said on Tuesday.
The sources further said that the test could be conducted today. “Delhi Police have approached FSL to conduct a polygraph test for the accused Aftab of Shraddha Murder Case. Preparations are underway. The test could be conducted today,” FSL sources said.
On Thursday, the court ordered Rohini FSL to conduct a narcotic test on Aaftab within five days.
