Netflix India and Neeraj Pandey (A Wednesday!) have announced a new crime drama series, Khakee: The Bihar Chapter, starring Karan Tacker (Specials Ops), Avinash Tiwary (Laila Majnu), Ashutosh Rana (Aranyak), Ravi Kishan (The Whistleblower), Anup Soni (Crime Patrol), Jatin Sarna (Sacred Games), Nikita Dutta (The Big Bull), Abhimanyu Singh (Sooryavanshi), Aishwarya Sushmita (Special Ops 1.5), Shraddha Das (Ek Mini Katha) and Vinay Pathak (Bheja Fry). Inspired by the true story of how Bihar’s most dangerous criminal was captured, Khakee: The Bihar Chapter is set in the early 2000s and follows the battle between two men on opposite sides of the law – a feared gang lord (Tiwary) and fiercely upright Indian police officer Amit Lodha (Tacker).
Given the subtext in the name – “The Bihar Chapter” – this feels like an attempt on Netflix India’s part to turn this into a potential anthology cop franchise called Khakee. It could take the form of Delhi Crime where the police stay and the crime changes. But the generic title — “Khakee” — gives it enough flexibility for future seasons to center on an entirely different story.
In parallel, Netflix has also revealed a sneak peek of Khakee: The Bihar Chapter, which is essentially a 45-second behind-the-scenes look at what to expect. Considering this is the first time we’re hearing about the TV show, it seems like a case of a title that was shopped around after it finished production. Pandey previously created the Kay Kay Menon-led spy thriller Special Ops franchise for Disney+ Hotstar, the Indian men’s cricket team documentary series Bandon Mein Tha Dum! for Voot Select and the Manoj Bajpayee-narrated diamond docuseries Secrets of the Kohinoor for Discovery+.
While Pandey is the creator of the new Indian Netflix series, Khakee: The Bihar Chapter has been directed by Bhav Dhulia (Rangbaaz Season 1) and written by Uma Shankar (Maharani Season 1). Shital Bhatia served as a producer on the Netflix show. Khakee: The Bihar Chapter is a production of Friday Storytellers, founded by Pandey and Bhatia.
“As an admirer of the platform that stands for such diversity in content and formats, I am delighted to announce Friday Storytellers’ partnership with Netflix with our upcoming series Khakee: The Bihar Chapter,” Pandey said in a prepared statement. “Set in the early 2000s, this police crime thriller from the heartland of Bihar is a great story that we wanted to create and share for [some time].
“And through Bhav Dhulia’s directorial lens and my partner Shital Bhatia’s production expertise, we have endeavored to bring the flavor to life with the tonality and treatment. Shot under extremely trying circumstances towards Jharkhand and Bihar across several [waves of the COVID-19 pandemic]it boasts a talented ensemble cast portraying strong characters that we hope will resonate with local and global Netflix audiences.”
Netflix India’s VP of Content, Monika Shergill, added: “We are delighted to bring one of India’s best storytellers, Neeraj Pandey, to Netflix with his powerful crime-drama series Khakee: The Bihar Chapter. A thrilling true story about the rise of A feared criminal and a determined cop, Neeraj will take audiences in India and around the world on an intense and unique journey through Bihar.”
Khakee: The Bihar Chapter “coming soon” to Netflix worldwide.
