Hugh Jackman returns as Wolverine in Deadpool 3. In a short sketch released on Twitter, the actor confirmed his interest in playing the beastly, clawed mutant from Marvel comics. The Deadpool movie is the first to take place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Studios a few years back. Furthermore, Deadpool himself, Ryan Reynolds (Free Guy), announced the official release date of September 6, 2024 along with a Deadpool graphics being cut by Weapon X’s claws.
“Hard to keep my mouth shut on this one,” Reynolds tweeted, trying to contain his excitement at the announcement. A clever take on his loquacious Marvel character Deadpool, whose mouth was literally sewn shut in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. A good portion of the clip is fluff, apologizing for missing Disney’s The D23 Expo that was held earlier this month. “And I… I’ve got nothing. Yeah, just completely empty up here,” he says, before Jackman strolls by in the background. When asked if he’ll be playing Wolverine one more time in Deadpool 3, he replies: ” Yes, of course, Ryan.”
After 17 years and nine films in the X-Men universe – including cameos – Jackman officially retired from the role in 2017’s Logan, which saw the barbarian mutant laid to rest. Deadpool aka Merc with a Mouth is known to have a shared history with Wolverine as both stories began at the Weapon X program. The pair maintain a rivalry thanks to their distinct ideologies, extended lifespan, and regeneration factor, which is a funny case for Deadpool as Logan’s healing factor can be quite inconsistent and less advanced.
Deadpool 3 marks a sentimental moment for Reynolds’ Deadpool, who first appeared in the aforementioned 2009 Wolverine film. The character, who was named Weapon 11 in the film, featured an uneventful ending and complete slaughter of his features.
Later in 2016, Tim Miller (Love, Death & Robots) conceived the first standalone Deadpool movie, which served as a redemption story for the character. The film was received positively and grossed $783.1 million (approx. Rs. 6,408 crore) worldwide against a $58 million (approx. Rs. 474 crore) budget. A sequel followed in 2018 – it was critically acclaimed and went on to earn $785.8 million (approx. Rs. 6,433 crore) at the global box office.
Deadpool 3 is scheduled to be released on September 6, 2024 in theaters worldwide. It’s unclear if Deadpool 3 is part of the MCU’s Phase 5 (which is supposed to end with Thunderbolts), or phase 6 (which is supposed to begin with Fantastic four).
